Francisca has been weaving baskets for 57 years. She learnt the skill from her mother when she was 7 years old, and she has been practicing this amazing skill ever since.

Francisca was born and raised in San Luis Amatlán, which has been her family’s home for many generations of her family before her. She is a single mother and one of the most experienced weavers in this tight-knit community.

Francisca’s extra large baskets are real works of art, and she loves incorporating traditional Mexican shapes and animals into her basket designs. Although she says she enjoys making all sorts of shapes and sizes, her favourites are always the very colourful baskets.

Whether it’s green, blue, red, or pink, Francisca loves making baskets that are vibrant and joyous. These baskets celebrate the origins of this age-old technique as the radiant hues encapsulate the vibrant colours that greet the eye all around the Oaxaca region.

When she’s not weaving, you might find Francisca tending to the fruit trees in her garden or playing with her adorable kittens.
